Leviathan, a monstrous berserker killing machine glowing with a mysterious blue aura, is menacing the Milkpail Nebula. Following on a long history of destruction, the great blue berserker’s latest strike annihilated the colony Shubra. Among Shubra’s many victims is spaceship captain Niles Domingo’s daughter. Now the great berserker has taken every member of Niles’ family and the captain will have his revenge.
Setting out with only his ship and crew, Niles intends to hunt down the giant killer. With the cooperation of three distinct human life themes, Niles may have a chance for his revenge. But living for revenge has a price, a very high price.

Berserker Blue Death Saberhagen Berserker Series Book 8 eBook Fred Saberhagen

I've been a fan of the Berserker series for many years, but I didn't enjoy this one much. The pace is very slow, and involves a lot of zooming back and forth across the galaxy looking for this one amazingly extra bad Berserker, but always managing to arrive just after the fight is over. Our heros (and us the readers) don't even lay eyes on the enemy until about 80% through the book, and then, it is an anticlimax as the buildup to such a badass machine delivers an incompetent fighter. For example in the heat of battle the good guys hide behind a rock for a half hour to develop some side plot and the Berserker never can figure out where they went.

All in all it feels like it should have been one of his short stories but someone decided to stretch it to book length. It didn't work, for me. Plus there are hints along the way that the enemy is developing some new weapon or technology but that story line is abandoned in the final pages with no conclusion. Setting up for a sequel? I sure hope not.

Oh yes and after proclaiming that we've scoured the galaxy and determined the only intelligent life is human, we discover a new lifeform: some vague kind of intelligent fog. The author promptly refers to this fog as another "human theme" so I guess by definition the only intelligent life is human because ALL intelligent life is "human". Ridiculous!

Berserker Blue Death Saberhagen Berserker Series Book 8 eBook Fred Saberhagen Reviews

Why are these people reviewing Berserker when the book at the top of the page is Berserker Blue Death, a wholly different Berserker title, a 1985 novel (and without a colon)? I have just heard the audio book of Berserker Blue Death. A fine story, among Saberhagen's best. Meanwhile, shape up, people. Look at Saberhagen's bibliography. And someone get that confusing colon removed.
The plot twists abound in this berserker novel. The characters are quite believable and relatively complex. A very enjoyable story; best yet from Fred Saberhagen's Berserker series.
